Superman is one of those characters I have never drawn to my satisfaction. Every time I attempt to draw the Man o'Steel, my result leaves me feeling "meh". So, I started this sketch as a Wolverine picture, but it quickly evolved in to Superman. I am pretty happy with it.

This is my first attempt at using COPIC markers! I talked to an artist at the CowTown Comixfest in Denver about the legendary markers and decided to give them a try. My wife bought me some for Christmas, and this is my first attempt to use them. I LOVE THEM!! I have been doing ink washes for my graytones, however it is hard get consistent values. I think that I will still use ink washes, but I am also going introduce the Copic markers into my arsenal!

I remember as a kid in my Star Wars storybooks, they referred to Darth Vader as a Dark Lord of the Sith; but they never explained what that meant! It had such a cool air of mystery around it, who where these Sith? Were there more? Did they all look like him?
Here is a recent commission I did of Mr. Darth "Annie" Vader. Yes, I do commissions, my prices are $50 for a 9x12 Black and White and $100 for a 11x17 black and white. Those prices are for one or two characters...more characters, the price is negotiable.

My biggest fan asked me to recreate the cover to the Ultimate Spider-man Volume 4 trade...so I did. I was never a big fan of how Bagley made Spidey's head and hands SO big; I understand he was trying to make him look younger, but it almost made him look like a 4 year old. Anyway, this is for my biggest fan, who is my son by the way:)

This is from issue 2 of Astonishing Adventures, the pencil stage of the artwork. I usually work rough in a 4H pencil and then tighten it up in a 2B mechanical. One benefit of inking your own work is the pencils don't have to be TOO tight, the inker (me) will take care of the details.

Cheyenne's first annual ZOMBIEFEST is creeping closer and closer! I will be at the Cheyenne Depot Plaza, at the Heroes Only booth, drawing zombified sketches of local zombie fans! Astonishing Adventures...redux

So, I had the first issue of my new FOUR issue mini series, Astonishing Adventures, IN...THE...CAN. Until I attended a symposia at this year's TRiCKSTER during SDCC; during which I realized...I need to revamp the book! I wasn't happy with the way the first half of the book looked; I wanted a stylistic change to happen during the story, but I wasn't happy with the way it turned out. SO...I am redoing a large portion of the book and I am much happier with it! For comparison, I am posting the 1st and 2nd versions of (part of) the same page.

This October 1st will the first and hofully not last, Cheyenne ZombieFest! I am going to be there doing Zombiefied sketches...so to get in the swing of things, I thought I'd do some warm up drawings. Well, here it is...my 100th post! When this goes up, I will be at Wizard World Chicago Comic Con, where I am A GUEST!!! This has been a good year for me so far, and this week will be a milestone; it has seen the death of Kenobi and will soon...oh, whoops...wrong milestones.
My self published graphic novel, Kidnapping Kevin Smith, FINALLY hits the newstands (worldwide, that is) and I am a guest at Wizard World. Wizard World Chicago, ten years ago, was my first con I ever attended...and now I am going there as a guest. Who knows, in 10 more years, I might be a SPECIAL guest.

Howdy all! I haven't updated my blog for a couple of weeks, I've been hard at work revising my first issue of my new series, "Astonishing Adventures". Thought it was complete, but after attending a Symposia at TR!CKSTER during SDCC, I realized I need to polish it up and redo some of the art. During the symposia, Greg Rucka said that if any of your work sets off a bell in your head, and you know deep down inside it's not your best...IT'S NOT and you NEED TO GET RID OF IT. So, I am revamping my first half of the book.

On another note, looks like "Kidnapping Kevin Smith" may not be in stores until August 10th. I was a bit tardy on the shipping because I had to order a bunch of newly printed copies. So, if it's not in you LCS this Wednesday, it will be NEXT Wednesday.

Well, tomorrow I am heading off to the geek meca known as Comic Con! Looks to be a fun year, especially with the hip alternative to the Hollywood madness of CCI; I'm talking about TR!CKSTER!!! Where I will get to sit at the feet of the masters and learn a thing or two about comic books. Plus Mike Allred's band, the GEAR is putting on a free show or two, which should be quite a good time. Whilst there, I am also trying to pitch my NEW series, Astonishing Adventures. Hopfully somebody will like what they see and take a chance on me...

Hey gang! This past weekend I tabled at the Denver ComicFest, my first time tabling a con! It was a great time. I shared a table with a hell of a guy and a hell of an artist, Brett Vinduska. I did some commissions at the con, which gave me the opprotunity to draw some characters I never drew before. Or in the case of this drawing, a lady from the Dept of Justice had me draw a picture of Liberty giving the BOOT to the MAN!

Wow, the Rocketeer...has there ever been a more perfect comic book series? I discovered the late Dave Stevens' book WAY late. But I have to tell you, it quickly became of my favorite comics of all time. And, the 11x17 inch version of the Complete Adventures is mind boggling beautiful. They say that behind every great man is a great woman; the same is true in my case, even though I am just okay...far from "great". My wife Alaina has been my greatest source of encouragement with my comic book, she believes in me, when I don't believe in myself. With out her support, I am pretty sure I would have lost my motivation and inpiration around my sixth rejection letter. So, I had to put her in my book, as a small nod to the happiness and ego boosts she provides on a daily basis.

Since I have been showcasing the Allred Kevin Smith, I thought I would show off MY likeness of the man. Kevin Smith; if you ever get the chance to chat to the dude in person, take it! He is such a kind, mild mannered, pleasant person to talk with. While he is hounded by fans nonstop, he still is very generous with his time and a very gracious person. Hell, he was nice enough to give me permission to do this comic book about him!

So....the day after Mike sent me the pencil sketch for the cover he sent me the fully inked and colored version! I opened the file, my eyes rapidly moved across the screen and passed out, all Chuck-like. That is how blown away I was. Here was the cover to my graphic novel I have been working on for a year; in all of its' Allred glory. Mike and Laura exceeded my expectations and I am very grateful that they did this.
I am just about ready to submit the book to Diamond and Haven to see if they will distribute it, so stay tuned for news on the books release.

So, with my sketch in his possession, Mike got crackin and turned out this great pencil drawing. Sunday I was in terrible shape, 102 degree fever with a painful case of strep throat; Mike e-mailed me the penciled page for approval that day....it was the best medicine I had received all day! I couldn't believe how he took a simple sketch and turned it into this funny and mysterious drawing.

Well gang...the wait is over!!! My latest graphic novel venture is a charming little story, with the unoriginal title...KIDNAPPING KEVIN SMITH!!! (guess what it's about).
This book has been a one man jam for the past year, with only my friends and family to bounce ideas off of and check my poor spelling. But one day, the stars alligned and the seemingly impossible happened: the one, the only MIKE "DOC" ALLRED got on board to do the cover. This was a MAJOR event for me, I have been a fan of Mike's work ever since I read about the Atomics in CSN! He has been an amazingly generous and kind person, who makes you feel like an old friend the first time you talk to him. And now he is drawing the cover of my comic book!!
So, based on some 1st grader quality sketches, Mike and his amazingly talented wife, Laura, created what I feel to be some of their best work to date! Well...at least their best work based on one of my sketches:-)
So, over the next few days, I will be posting the progress of this great cover, for a pretty good graphic novel, drawn by a living legend! Here is phase one, my sketches of 4 cover ideas....

I am VERY happy with the way it turned out, which is rare for me. I usually nitpick my work to death, find fault with every little thing; but this time, I am quite happy with the end result!
I just hope posting this doesn't some how disqualify me from the contest....

I have included Brian in all of my comic book projects over the years, and in this one he happens to play the part of the person who inadvertantly sends out protagonists down their sinister path.

So, the 3rd annual ComicFest in Denver, Colorado is having a contest to desing this year's poster/t-shirt. I have decided to toss my hat in the ring. They said they want an image that incorporates Denver and maybe one of the characters from a superhero movie that is coming out this year. So, here is THOR over Denver. In the inks stage. Next week I will watercolor the hell outta it!

As I mentioned in my previous post, in my new graphic novel, I am the owner of Heroes Only comic book store. Here is a shot of me, reading one of my favorite comic books, Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt’s "The Sixth Gun" and on the back of comic is an ad for Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener's "Atomic Robo". I always try to work my favorite comic books, music, movies, friends, etc. into my comic books.

The interior shots are based on how the store used to look, before owner P.J. Brown fixed it all fancy-like. In the story, I am the owner of the store, and poor P.J. is just an customer...

One of my favorite Cheyenne landmarks makes an appearance in my graphic novel...the Lincoln Theater. I've painted this theater in the past and when my story needed a movie theater, it was the first one to pop in my head. Here in Cheyenne it is the "cheap seats" theater; but in my fictional town of Harrison, California, it is a revival theater. Hmm..."Misery" and "Ruthless People", wonder how those two films will effect our two antagonists?

As a teacher, I utilize my down time in the classroom and work on my graphic novel! I have some amazing, hardworking classes, which allow me time to work with the kids; letting them see a dedicated artist at work. Plus they are only 12-15 year olds, so they are easily amazed and think I am the best artist in the world!! Yes, I am a small, small man.

Hey everyone! I am back. It is a new year and hopefully a good year for my latest project! For the past year I have been slaving away on a graphic novel that I am writing, drawing, inking, lettering...well basically it's been a one man show; and now it is getting close to completion! So, I will be posting images, pages, and some surprises from the graphic novel over the next few months.

Well, it's that time of year again. Stores have been playing Christmas music since October 31st, at 11:59 pm, the weather is snowy one day and spring like the next, and we are planning our annual art sale! This year looks like it might be the best one yet! We've got some amazing artists on the roster and a great location. The sale will be December 9, 10, 11. The Among Friends are Connie Norman, Maura Jacobsen, and me. This year our show will be at The Artful Hand Gallery, 302 East 1st Ave. And we have a couple of guest artists Georgia Roswell, Mixed Media & Paper, Jennifer Rife, Silk Fiber Coil baskets, Kelley Jones, Mixed Media Figurative Kinetic Sculptures, and Heather Fetsco, Jewerly. Grub's...what can be said about this delicious burger joint in my hometown of Rock Springs. Burgers so greasey that clear gold leaks out of the burger on the plate. Amazing homemade fries dipped in beef gravy. Chocolate shakes that are so thick and cold....mmmmmm.

With my folks retiring and leaving Rock Springs, I guess I am starting to get a bit nostalgic for the town and my old haunts.
